COLA Bill Headed for Governor’s Desk

Retirees will receive additional funds in their checks, effective July 1, when HB 3112 (Peterson and Mazzei) is signed by Governor Henry.  The bill passed both chambers unanimously on the last day of session.

The bill encountered a last-minute problem the day before session ended, when Rep. Richard Morrissette challenged a section of the bill as not germane.  The bill was tabled and passed the next day.

HB 3112 provides a four percent cost-of-living adjustment for state retirement systems, specifically four percent for OPERS retirees.  However, the language that allows retirees to receive annual adjustments automatically, without a vote of the legislature, is not in the final version.

“While we appreciate the increase in benefit this year, OPEA will continue to fight for a continuing COLA,” said Scott Barger, OPEA Deputy Director.  “The technical problem that the bill encountered in the House at the last minute is an example of what can go wrong in the legislative process.”

I know! Everyone is saying this, BUT everything else is going up besides our wages. Continue the good work and maybe we'll get automatic annual adjustments written in a bill. Keep up the good work!

I still think that our insurance premiums should be taxed deferred.
