OPEA 2009 DELEGATE ASSEMBLY AND CONVENTION

OPEA members from across the state will converge at the Lake Murray resort August 28th and 29th for the 2009 Delegate Assembly and Convention.

“Get on Board the OPEA Express” is this year’s theme, as state employees rally for better pay, benefits and job security during what is proving to be a tough economic year.

“During the 34 years OPEA has been in existence, this has to be one of the worst years we’ve ever seen for state employees,” said board member Christie Biggs.  “We keep hearing the talk about furloughs and RIFS and budget cuts, and it’s frightening.  So now is the time for every one of us to get on board, make OPEA stronger than it’s ever been, and protect our jobs.”

This year’s convention kicks off with a Friday night luau, which is free to OPEA members.  Registration begins at 8 a.m. the next morning, with the opening gavel of the Delegate Assembly sounding at 9 a.m.  Adoption of the Platform will take place during the convention as well.

“The Platform is not set in stone,” said OPEA Policy and research Director Trish Frazier.  “It can be amended from the floor, but each OPEA work site should meet and discuss the proposed Platform prior to the convention.  If you want to make additions or modifications, you can bring your ideas to the Delegate Assembly.”

Rooms at the Lake Murray resort average $68 per room.  Pricing for the Delegate Assembly and Convention is listed below.

Is Amtrak from Oklahoma City to Lake Murray also a round trip back to Oklahoma City on Saturday? If so how much?

I have the same question as Gabrielle. Is the amount quoted for round trip, or do we need to send more money for the return trip?

If Friday night Luau is free then why is the price for Saturday Breakfast and Lunch $40 if you are there Friday and $20 for Saturday only?

So, when do I send my money with my registration, or can I pay the day I am there?

Is payment due with registration, or can I register now and pay later by a certain date?

As a new state employee, and new OPEA member, I've not yet attended a convention. I'm a bit confused on the pricing. It says $20 for Saturday, however the ala cart pricing would only be $17. And if the luau is free to members, why is it listed for $15?

What actually gets done at the Convention? In the past, I've attended conventions for other organizations and discovered the real purpose of the meeting seemed to be giving each other awards: Member of the Year, Officer of the Quarter, Most Improved Chapter, etc. I don't mean to impy that OPEA's convention is like that, but I'd like to know if there's an agenda.

We are coming from the Vinita area and will be riding the bus, will there be transportation to and from the lodge to the cabins as we were unable to get a room in the lodge? One of our girls is handicapp and will need trasportation.
