OPEA Platform Process begins for 2009

Do you have an idea about improving your working conditions, benefits or compensation?  With the Legislature adjourned and elections heating up, it is once again time to begin the OPEA platform process.  The Association will be working on the 2009-2010 Platform through the summer.  The deadline for planks and ideas from membership has been extended to June 12.

To submit an idea or plank to be included in the OPEA Platform for 2009-2010, click here to download the form or phone Trish Frazier at the OPEA office, 405-524-6764 or 800-880-6732.  You may also e-mail your ideas to trishf@opea.org

The Platform Committee will meet in June to consolidate recommendations into the proposed Platform, which will be published in the July Advocate.

Due to the high cost of gas and other things I would like to see us go to 4 day 10 hour work shift or something like what DHS is doing where they work 9 hour days and get an extra day every two weeks off. Anything that would help cut down on the cost of gas utilities. or even do some work at home via lap tops, anything. I personally have a round trip commuit every day of 64 miles with gas as high as it is it can certainly take a toll especially when you are a single parent like myself.

Dawn,

We went from that 9 hour schedule to the 4 ten hour days about 2 years ago. I too commute a good distance to work each day, and at the time it saved me a bunch.. since that time gas prices have doubled and now I pay more... It costs me $260 a month just for the priviledge of going into a job where the management above our department just don't care. If the Legislature really cared about the average state employee they would be trying to find a way to resolve the crisis.

There are a lot of folks that could benefit from telecommuting 2 days a week..

I am not sure how long I can hold out.. I do what I do because I enjoy it.. definatly not for the pay.. but when I have to start making choices about what bills to pay then it might be time to go back to the corporate world.

This whole thing has really hit the people that work for me.. I wouldnt even be too upset if they found a way to do something for the folk that made less that 30k a year.. hell at least they would be showing that they are trying to help those that are most affected...

I will quit rambling now..

I would like to see the the first $50,000.00 of State Salary exempt from state income taxes. This would provide a great releif for state worker who seem to never get a pay raise because the pay raises are all going to the Teachers, Lawyers and the Governors and LT Governors staff.

raymond that would make too much sense. And then we the ones that never get a raise couldn't take care of the people at the capital that go out to the bars and have one for the road from 5pm-2am. Every night.

No state tax for the first $50,000 earnings for state employees is the way to go! It doesn't require funding and they are cutting taxes. Our Legislators should be thrilled with this idea!

I would like to see the offices go to 4 day work week and be off and that would help in not showing up with the gas five days a week, but I don't think anyone is that smart or cares about the state employee

Since this is an election year, we need to see who worked against or did nothing about getting regular State employees a raise and take an active approach to have them replaced. Look at their voting records or what committees they served on. Not supporting a raise is the same as voting against a raise. We seem to be able to cut taxes for a few or give tax breaks for sports teams. What did these things do for the State workers? I for one am also tired of hearing about how bad teachers pay is while regular State workers aren't considered for anything.

Vote every one of our reps and senators out of office, they are not helping the state employees. We as state employees can control all major elections in the state. Until we unite
all we will get is maybe and bones scraps from thw great state snators and representivites.9

If we can't get a raise, I'd like to see us have 7 hour days - 35 hours per week. That would almost be like a raise.
