OPEA Scores Temporary Privacy Victory for State Employees

OKLAHOMA CITY (April 9, 2010) – The Oklahoma Public Employees Association is pleased with a judge’s decision today to keep state employee’s information confidential.

In Oklahoma County District Court, Judge Bryan Dixon granted a temporary restraining order that will keep private the birthdates of state workers.

“This is a significant win,” said OPEA Executive Director Sterling Zearley. “It clearly shows the courts realize the potential hazards that could come from releasing confidential information on 40,000 state employees.”

The OPEA has been involved in an ongoing dispute with The Oklahoman, which issued a batch request for those documents.

“There is absolutely no reason they need that information on every single state employee. If there was a question on a particular person, all it takes is one phone call to the agency to clear it up. This was simply a witch hunt, trying to find anything that might embarrass our state’s workforce.”
