OPEA Scores Win for Retirees

The Oklahoma Senate has voted on SB 1637, providing a 4 percent COLA for retirees this year, and a 2 percent COLA in following years.

"This is tremendous news for our state's retirees," said OPEA Executive Sterling Zearley from the Capitol.  "We have been working with Senator Aldridge on this bill, and thank him for his support."

The bill now goes to the House, where it will be carried by Representatives Lisa Billy and Wes Hilliard.  OPEA urges its members to contact the offices of Billy and Hilliard and thank them for their support.

This is such great news as one who will retire soon. If the House passes this bill, we won't have to beg every year for a COLA. Before, bills like this don't every get out of committee to even get a vote. Great Job!!

It is nice to know that while current state employees are facing possible furloughs due to severe budget shortfalls, that the OPEA has managed to push through a pay increase for retirees.

This is great news for our retirees who are on fixed incomes and with the increases in health insurance and no cola for Social Security this will be a great help to our members and their families.
Thanks to all who are working on behalf of our employees who dedicated their life work to the citizens of Oklahoma. This is what OPEA is all about - taking care of all of our members both active and retired.

That's great if you're a retiree. But, how is it that there is money for raises for retirees, but no money in the budget to maintain the jobs for current employees. When I asked an OPEA rep why they weren't doing more about pressuring the legislature over agency budget cuts, I was told, "You can't let go of money if there is no money." I guess there isn't any money to let go of because it is all going to raises for retirees. I guess that doesn't have anything to with the fact most of the management at OPEA are retirees!
