Why is my paycheck smaller this year?

Payday is here and it’s time to pay those bills, buy some groceries and hopefully have some money left over for something fun.

But your first check of 2013 is smaller than usual. Why is that?

Because things at the federal level have changed.

OPEA has been fielding queries as to why people’s paychecks are smaller in January than they were in 2012. Many are frustrated and angry. We understand and sympathize. Others still are blaming the state of Oklahoma for this decrease. That’s simply not true. You see, the reason paychecks are lower is because the federal tax system has changed. Because of the expiration of the Social Security withholding rate from 4.2 percent to 6.2 percent, most Oklahomans now see 2 percent less money in their checks than they did in 2012.

So what does this mean for you, the state employee? It means you’ll be taking another ding in the pocketbook. According to a handy calculator from the Wall Street Journal, a worker making $40,000 a year will see another $800 vanishing into tax coffers over the course of 2013. Click this link to test out the calculator yourself and find out how big of a hit you or your family will be taking this year.

Changes like this on the federal level we can do nothing about. But we can do something on the state level to grow that paycheck in the right direction. This session OPEA will be working toward performance pay increases for all state employees to ensure your job salaries are more in line with those earned in the private sector.

Performance pay will not work.Seen it to many times in my work place. The workers that are on cell phones and internet most of the day will be the ones getting the money...had several fasttracked in my office..inflated ratings all the time...guess you can't make a mistake if your not doing anything...complain about your ratings..your job life will suffer..please understand in my opinion this is the way it works..at least where I'm at...the only reason this would pass is because it will be cheaper on the state than a cross the board pay increase..then I guess the people that don't get a raise will have only themselves to blame..but you can say we got you a pay raise....bet you will not post this one.....you would not post the last one I sent in on this subject..be nice and please post this one...thanks

Excuse me---our benefit allowance did not go up as much as the increase in the health insurances and that too, makes the paychecks smaller.

I appreciate everything OPEA does, I just need a sounding board to vent. We understand the federal tax went into effect. Still the cost of living has not gone down, only our paychecks. In my world (single income family of 3) I just lost 176.00 a month for 2013, due to the increase in my cost for State insurance combined with the new federal tax increase. So, the State in my world did cause my paycheck to go way down from what I had available in 2012, per monthly budget. It is getting impossible to tread water at this rate. I don't remember getting a raise in how long? I do not think I was compensated when I was forced to obsorb all the duties I was assigned when we had the vo-bo. I am now doing what the State used to pay 2-3 people for and we were short handed then, and the responsibility keeps comming? So, please, as you advocate for this mirage of a pay raise remember, it will take more than a couple dollars to regain any boyance on our sinking ships. I do try to count my blessings however,as a 25 year dedicated employee I feel worse off now than when I started.
