OPEA CALL TO ACTION – SB1124 – Call Now

Call Your Representative and Tell Them Not to Unclassify Department of Tourism Employees

Your Job Could Be Next!

If passed, SB 1124 immediately unclassifies 247 unfilled jobs at Department of Tourism and every Tourism job that comes open after July 1, 2013. Plus, their employees will have to give up classified status if they want a promotion. The classified service provides state employees with basic rights. It prevents favoritism and political patronage in hiring. The House may vote on it the week of May 20th..

If this bill is passed, Tourism employees can be hired and fired not because of how they do their job but because of political influence. Plus, if the Department of Tourism wants to downsize, they will be able to terminate employees without the Reduction in Force process or offer them a severance package.

Employees like park rangers in the state parks need the protection of classified service so they can do their jobs without fear of retaliation.

If this bill is signed into law, other agencies may take the opportunity to make all their jobs unclassified. It is important for all OPEA members to let the legislators know how they feel.
